Anthony Vernillo received his DDS (Dentistry) from Case Western Reserve University in 1977; his Certificate (Oral Pathology) in 1979 and his PhD (Pathology) Graduate Division of the Biological Sciences in 1982, both at The University of Chicago; Postdoctoral Research Associate (Cell Biology) Yale University School of Medicine in 1984; and his MBE (Master of Bioethics) from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. Dr. Vernillo is Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology & Medicine at New York University College of Dentistry. He has received grant funding from the NIH and other sources; published in refereed journals and book chapters; and presented at national and international meetings. Dr. Vernillo has provided dental care in outreach programs to Tanzania for a not-for-profit organization, Miracle Corners of the World, as a member of its board of directors. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award from New York University in 2002, and induction into the New York University Academy of Distinguished Educators at the College of Dentistry in 2010. Dr. Vernillo’s current academic pursuits include research, teaching, and curriculum development in Bioethics. Dr. Vernillo teaches bioethics at the New York University School of Medicine, College of Dentistry, and College of Nursing. His current research focuses on the ethical and legal considerations of rapid oral diagnostic testing. Dr. Vernillo also serves as an ethics consultant to the Manhattan Veterans Administration and Bryn Mawr Hospitals.
